University Cancels State-Supported Summer Courses

The onset of massive budget cuts to the California State University (CSU) has forced Cal Poly Pomona to cancel state funding for the 2009 summer quarter. This decision was made on Friday afternoon, June 5. All classes that had been scheduled to begin on June 22 and July 29 are now cancelled. To support student graduation requirements, the university will offer a fee-based summer schedule through the College of the Extended University beginning on July 13. These fully transferrable accredited courses meet Cal Poly Pomona degree requirements.

University business operations will remain open throughout the summer. In addition, Study Abroad programs will continue as planned.



"We are facing catastrophic cuts in funding, ones that will drastically limit our ability to meet student needs for the 2009-10 academic year," said President Michael Ortiz. "The cost of summer courses effect the ensuing academic year. By suspending state funding for the summer, we can lessen the impact for the balance of the year."



The CSU is almost $600 million short of its basic workload needs for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 fiscal years, due in large part to the state's deteriorating economy. The system expects 2009-10 cuts to range from $400 million to $700 million, numbers reflective of the combined budgets of Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State. Locally, Cal Poly Pomona's share of these cuts could be from $20 million to $35 million.

Freshman and transfer students whose initial academic quarter was to begin this summer will be eligible to enroll in the fall regardless of whether they attend the fee-based summer schedule.

University colleges are now working on creating and enhancing the course offerings for the fee-based summer schedule. Course costs are $220 per unit for lecture courses and $280 for lab-based classes. Formal admission to Cal Poly Pomona is not a requirement. Stafford Loans, Pell Grants and Work Study may be available for regularly admitted students.
